Owners of photovoltaic systems can now share surplus electricity directly with neighbours, family members or businesses under a new peer-to-peer model, ORF Salzburg reported. They can also sell or give away the power.

The model took effect on Thursday, while practical implementation is due to begin on Monday. Participants must have the same grid operator and agree on the terms in a contract. The agreement must state whether the electricity is being sold or given away and, if applicable, set a price. The arrangement can also generate a profit, which was not previously possible, said Markus Schwarz, Salzburg’s official responsible for energy communities.

Participants may also pay lower grid charges: 57 per cent less if they are connected to the same transformer, or 28 per cent less if they are connected to the same substation, Schwarz said. The reduced charges will take effect on January 1, 2027.

A sample peer-to-peer contract and further information are available at energiegemeinschaften.gv.at.
