Burgenland will host the 2029 Gran Fondo World Championships, with more than 4,000 amateur cyclists expected to compete, ORF reported.

The event will take place in the final week of September 2029, with Mörbisch serving as the start and finish location. Organisers expect up to 17,000 visitors in the region, and four competitions are planned.

The championships will be organised by the team behind the Neusiedler See cycling marathon. The race route will form the centrepiece of the event. Organisers are developing their team and are beginning detailed route planning, said event director Johannes Hessenberger.

Former Italian cycling star Ivan Basso will serve as an ambassador for the championships. He said he would bring experience from nine years of helping manage a cycling team to support the project.

Gran Fondo means “long ride” and refers to amateur world championships for cyclists across all age groups. The 25 best riders in each age group in the Gran Fondo World Series qualify for the event. The Neusiedler See cycling marathon is part of that series.
