Partnerships lift Styrian universities in global rankings

Universities in Styria performed well in the latest international rankings, with Graz University of Technology rising nearly 200 places. ORF reports that university partnerships and strategic alliances are helping increase the institutions’ visibility and standing.

The Medical University of Graz ranked 221st, making it Austria’s third-highest-placed university. Graz University of Technology is now among the world’s top 450, while the University of Graz made the top 550. Montanuniversität Leoben, a smaller university, ranked in the group from 800th to 1,000th. The Graz University of the Arts was not listed.

Graz University of Technology rector Horst Bischof said the rise reflected the university’s consistent work. He also pointed to targeted adjustments to research data to meet the ranking’s requirements and the university’s membership in the European university alliance Unite.

Montanuniversität Leoben is also pursuing international partnerships, particularly with China, to raise its profile. Rector Peter Moser highlighted the university’s participation in the European University EURECA-PRO alliance.

Styria’s university rectors warned that planned cuts to university budgets could put future rankings at risk. They are looking to partnerships with industry and business to stabilise finances and improve their positions, while maintaining international links with leading universities as a central part of their strategy.
