ETH Zurich falls to 12th in global university rankings

ETH Zurich has dropped one place to 12th in the 2027 Times Higher Education university rankings, SRF reported. Tsinghua University in China rose to 11th, overtaking the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich.

ETH Zurich remains the highest-ranked university in continental Europe, Times Higher Education said. The Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne, known as EPFL, also slipped one place, to 36th.

The top 10 universities are all in the United States or the United Kingdom. The University of Oxford retained first place, followed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Princeton University, which held second and third place respectively.

Six Swiss universities feature in the top 200. The University of Basel rose nine places to 111th, while the University of Bern fell 13 places to 121st and the University of Lausanne dropped four places to 129th. The University of Geneva climbed three places to 163rd.

The ranking assesses about 2,000 universities using 17 indicators across teaching, research environment, research quality, international outlook and industry. Five European universities left the top 200, while five Asian universities moved into it.
