Borouge opens 100 million euro plastics plant in Schwechat

ORF reports that Borouge has opened a new plastics compounding plant in Schwechat after investing 100 million euros. The facility blends polypropylene resins with recycled propylene and performance-enhancing additives.

The plant was planned before the March 2026 merger that formed Borouge International, bringing together Borealis, Borouge of Abu Dhabi and Canada’s Nova Chemicals. Construction began in 2023. The new facility stands beside a refinery that supplies some of its raw materials.

Borouge International, headquartered in Vienna, is valued at about 60 billion US dollars, or 52 billion euros. It is the world’s fourth-largest producer of polyolefin plastics and employs about 10,000 people, including around 700 in Schwechat. OMV and energy company ADNOC each own 50 percent of the group.

The plant’s plastic can be used to make products ranging from car bumpers to coffee machines. The share of recycled material varies by order but has reached up to 40 percent, according to Schwechat site manager Jürgen Artner, who said demand for recycled material is increasing.

The facility is part of a wider production system that includes an innovation centre in Linz. Customer requirements are developed there, then tested in Schwechat before production at larger scale.
