Hainburg clears tap water after contamination warning

Tap water in Hainburg, a town in the Bruck an der Leitha district, is safe to drink again, ORF reported, citing the municipality’s website. Residents no longer need to boil the water before drinking it.

Tests conducted after a new assessment found no further concerns, the municipality said on Monday. Special hygiene measures, including boiling the water for three minutes, were no longer required with immediate effect.

A week earlier, elevated levels of coliform bacteria and enterococci had been detected. The water did not meet the microbiological requirements for drinking water, and the pipeline network was disinfected with chlorine as an immediate measure.

The municipality said the last contamination had been detected in 2016. Possible causes of such contamination include measurement errors, burst pipes, flooding or insects.

Quarterly inspections and weekly in-house checks allow deviations from the microbiological requirements to be detected quickly, the municipality said.
