Mother goes on trial over alleged killing of 11-year-old son

A 39-year-old woman went on trial at Leoben Regional Court on Monday accused of murdering her 11-year-old son, ORF reported. She allegedly killed him with several knife wounds in January and has confessed to the crime.
The incident happened on the afternoon of January 30 in an apartment in Leoben. The woman then allegedly tried to take her own life but also called emergency services.
Police arrested her at the scene. Bernhard Riedler, head of the Leoben public prosecutor’s office media unit, said she was taken to prison on the prosecutor’s orders and confessed during her initial questioning.
A toxicological examination found no evidence that she had consumed alcohol or other substances affecting her consciousness. A psychiatric assessment concluded that she was legally competent at the time of the crime.
If convicted, the woman could receive a prison sentence of between 10 and 20 years or life imprisonment. A verdict was expected on Monday.
