Burgenland festivals draw 500,000 visitors over summer

About 500,000 people attended major summer festivals and events in Burgenland between June and September, according to ORF, as the Culture Enterprises Burgenland assessed the 2026 season positively.

The Nova Rock Festival in Nickelsdorf was the biggest draw, attracting about 215,000 fans over four days. The Mörbisch lake stage welcomed around 146,000 visitors, including about 105,000 people who attended performances of the musical La Cage aux Folles and six guest events such as Starnacht am Neusiedler See and a performance by DJ priest Padre Guilherme.

About 90,000 people attended Giacomo Puccini’s Tosca at the opera in the St Margarethen quarry. The Kobersdorf Castle Games drew 12,000 visitors for the comedy Noises Off, while more than 11,000 people attended Viennese Blood and Uhudler State Theatre performances at Tabor Castle in Neuhaus am Klausenbach.

Claudi Priber, managing director of Culture Enterprises Burgenland, said the season showed how broad and diverse the organisation’s cultural programme had become. Established festivals, new cultural venues and different event formats combined to reach a wide audience, she said.

Burgenland Governor Hans Peter Doskozil of the Social Democratic Party said the response confirmed the state’s cultural policy. The aim, he said, was to make culture accessible across all regions, attract visitors and strengthen local communities.
