Firefighters rescue roe deer from six-metre well

Firefighters in Alkoven rescued a roe deer from a nearly six-metre-deep, waterless well early on Sunday, ORF reported. A woman walking nearby said she had heard the animal crying from inside.

The well was open after its concrete cover had broken and fallen to the bottom. The roe deer was barely visible beneath it.

Firefighters, including a rope-rescue team, and a hunter from the local hunting association arrived at about 7.45am. After a tripod was set up, the hunter positioned his car on the field track to provide an anchor point for the rescuers.

A rope rescuer was lowered into the well and managed to grab the animal. A motor winch then pulled both the rescuer and the roe deer to the surface. The animal was handed over to the crew and ran away unharmed.
