Drug-impaired driver causes serious crash in Tyrol

A drug-impaired driver caused a serious crash on the Plansee Road in Breitenwang, ORF reported. An 18-year-old woman was seriously injured after the motorcycle on which she was riding as a passenger collided with the rear of a braking car.

The crash happened shortly after 6 p.m. on Friday. A 20-year-old German man was driving from Plansee towards Reutte, followed by a 19-year-old German motorcyclist carrying his 18-year-old girlfriend. At the same time, a motorhome was travelling in the opposite direction.

In a blind bend, a 31-year-old Canadian driving behind the motorhome began overtaking. The oncoming car had to brake sharply, and the motorcyclist was unable to avoid a rear-end collision. The woman was thrown from the motorcycle, struck the rear of the car and landed on the road.

The Canadian initially drove away from the scene. More than an hour later, he returned and told emergency responders that he believed he may have been involved in the crash. Tests found signs of impairment by drugs, and his driving licence was provisionally confiscated.
