A 56-year-old driver struck a 12-year-old boy in Wels on Friday evening, ORF reported. The boy was trying to cross Lindenstraße at around 6 p.m. when he stepped onto the road between two parked cars.

The driver apparently saw him too late and could not stop in time. His car hit the boy head-on.

The boy suffered serious injuries and was taken to Wels Hospital for further medical treatment after receiving initial care at the scene.

Police said on Saturday that the driver had been under the influence of alcohol. The test showed a blood alcohol level of 1.44 per mille, and his driving licence was temporarily confiscated.
