MVV to raise fares 4.9 percent and add Kaufbeuren, Ostallgäu

Fares on the Munich Transport and Tariff Association, or MVV, will rise by an average of 4.9 percent from January 1, 2027, BR reported. The network will also expand to include the city of Kaufbeuren and the district of Ostallgäu.

The MVV said the increase was intended primarily to offset higher operating costs, particularly for fuel.

Not all tickets will become more expensive. Prices for short-distance tickets, single tickets for individual zones and children’s day tickets will remain unchanged.

The multi-ride strip ticket will rise from 18.70 euros to 21 euros. Its digital version will cost 19.50 euros, making it cheaper than the paper ticket. Prices will also increase for single day tickets, group day tickets, weekly tickets and monthly tickets.

With the expansion, the MVV network will have 14 zones instead of 12. Passengers will be able to travel with a single MVV ticket from Munich to Kaufbeuren or towards Füssen. Network-wide fares, including the 365-euro ticket, will also apply across the expanded area.

For particularly long journeys into the two new zones, a fare cap will apply. Journeys extending beyond zones M to 12 will cost the same as journeys covering zones M to 12.

Holders of the social ticket will no longer face a morning restriction. The ticket is currently invalid on weekdays between 6 a.m. and 9 a.m. The low-cost 9 a.m. monthly ticket will be discontinued because of low demand.
