Egg wins Austrian mobility award after slowing traffic

The municipality of Egg has won the Austrian VCÖ Mobility Award for redesigning its Gmuondsplatz village square and calming traffic in the centre, ORF reported. The project received the award in the “traffic calming” category on Thursday evening.
A total of 388 projects and concepts were submitted for the 35th VCÖ Mobility Award and assessed by a specialist jury. The awards were presented in 13 categories.
Egg redesigned its village square in 2024 with trees and other greenery. The three country roads converging in the centre were converted into 30 km/h zones.
“The village square used to be a car park. Today, after the redesign, it is a popular meeting place for the population,” said Ulla Rasmussen, managing director of the VCÖ. She said traffic calming revitalises communities and improves residents’ quality of life.
The redesigned Gmuondsplatz had already received the Vorarlberg VCÖ Mobility Award 2026 in early September.
