Upper Austrian logistics company wins mobility award for electric trucks

Hörsching-based Schachinger Logistik has won the 35th VCÖ Mobility Award for replacing diesel trucks with electric vehicles, ORF reported. Twelve other projects were also recognised at a ceremony at Vienna’s Odeon Theatre on Thursday evening, from 388 entries.

The awards were presented by the VCÖ, Austria’s transport club, Transport Minister Peter Hanke and Austrian Federal Railways.

Schachinger Logistik won the overall award and the prize in the Energy and Resource Conservation category. VCÖ Managing Director Ulla Rasmussen said the company was replacing expensive imported crude oil with locally produced solar power, keeping the resulting economic value in the region rather than sending it abroad.

Other winners included the market town of Wiener Neudorf for child-friendly transport planning and the Vorarlberg market town of Egg for its car-free village square. Jugend am Werk Steiermark was recognised for an inclusive mobility project.

Vienna’s public transport operator Wiener Linien and the city’s MA 18 department won the Public Transport category for extending tram line 18 in Vienna. Graz University of Technology won the Mobility Management category for its project on sustainable travel.

Egg also received an award in the Traffic Calming category for redesigning its centre to make it more climate-friendly and reduce traffic. The village square, previously used as a car park, is now a car-free meeting place.

Hanke said the transition in mobility was a shared task for politics, business, science and people who were driving concrete change with new ideas.
