Vienna’s Postsportareal plan keeps sport at its centre

Plans for the future of the Postsportareal sports complex in Vienna’s Hernals district will preserve its sporting role, ORF reported. The Post AG has begun developing an urban planning framework for the 15-hectare complex.

The existing sports facilities will remain at their current scale and will be modernised. A new multipurpose hall is also planned. Community sports, school sports and club sports will continue, with football, tennis, handball, basketball, volleyball, beach volleyball, field hockey and minigolf among the activities expected to remain available.

New housing is planned only on already sealed areas at the edges of the complex. The plans also envisage public routes through the grounds, as well as a supermarket, a kindergarten, restaurants or a healthcare facility.

Public participation starts in October

Post AG and the city will begin a public participation process with an information event at the Postakademie on October 6. Residents and others will be able to submit ideas. An outdoor exhibition presented at the event will remain on the grounds and be available to visitors.

The current tenant, Post Sportverein, is still awaiting a decision on its future. A new tender is under way for sports operations from 2028.
