Software problem delays reopening of Tyrol rail tunnel

Technical problems prevented the planned Monday reopening of the Unterinntalbahn rail line between Radfeld and Baumkirchen, ORF reported. The route had been closed for two months, partly to enable trains to run at shorter intervals.

Train protection and control on the underground section is based on the European Train Control System. A new signalling software package was also due to be installed, but problems appear to have occurred during the process.

ÖBB said late Monday that it was working intensively to resolve the issue. Test runs were planned for Monday evening and overnight. Their outcome will determine whether the tunnel can reopen on Tuesday.

In recent months, the 2012 railway line had undergone work to increase the number of signalling blocks, allowing trains to follow one another more closely. The old light signals were also removed.

An overtaking station at Vomp was completed in the Terfener Tunnel.
