Authorities find 55 reptiles in Burgenland print shop

Authorities found 55 reptiles in two back rooms during an inspection of a print shop in Burgenland, ORF reported, citing a statement from the Finance Ministry on Sunday. Additional reptiles were seized at the 40-year-old owner’s home.

The animals found at the company included snakes, chameleons and turtles. The inspection was carried out by the responsible district authority and police under the Animal Welfare Act.

Customs investigators were also called in after officials suspected that some of the reptiles were protected or strictly protected under the Washington Convention on wildlife protection.

While the reptiles kept at the man’s home were reportedly well cared for and had sufficient space, many of the animals found at the print shop were in extremely poor health. Officials observed signs of pneumonia, probably caused by significantly low keeping temperatures, as well as severe bite wounds and skin changes. Some animals were dehydrated and weak, and several had visible mite infestations.

Staff from the Vienna exotic-animal shelter Leo for Hope collected the reptiles and provided them with professional care and accommodation.

The 40-year-old owner now faces a fine from the district authority and a report to the public prosecutor’s office.
