Two climbers rescued after separate Traunstein accidents

Two people were rescued by helicopter after separate accidents on the Traunstein mountain in a two-hour period on Saturday, ORF reported.

At about 11.25 a.m., a 44-year-old woman from the Salzburg-Umgebung district fell about 20 metres while descending the Mair-Alm trail. She had been hiking with her 45-year-old husband and two other people after the group spent the night at the Traunsteinhaus.

The woman managed to stop her fall by holding on to a branch. Her husband alerted emergency services and provided first aid. The crew of the Christophorus 10 emergency helicopter rescued her by cable and flew her to the Salzkammergut Clinic in Gmunden with injuries of undetermined severity.

At about 1.30 p.m., a German climber was hit by falling rocks during a climb on the mountain’s southwest ridge. A rope team ahead dislodged the rocks, and the climber was unable to move out of the way despite warnings. He was struck on the shoulder and could not continue climbing independently.

The man was also rescued by cable, this time by the Martin 3 emergency helicopter, and flown to the Salzkammergut Clinic in Gmunden.
