New Plansee cycle path opens after rapid construction

The new cycle path between Breitenwang and Lake Plansee was officially opened on Friday morning, ORF reports. The project cost around 2.5 million euros and is considered a showcase project because it was completed quickly.

Plans were drawn up in autumn 2024, construction began in August 2025 and the route was completed this summer. Around 3.3 kilometres of new cycle path were built and paved between Breitenwang and Lake Plansee. A further 1.2 kilometres of existing route were renovated and resurfaced with gravel.

The path has two 1.5-metre-wide lanes for cyclists, as well as a separate pedestrian route. New rest and viewing points with wooden loungers, tables and benches have also been added.

The project was intended to provide a safer alternative to the heavily trafficked Plansee state road. The previous route was considered particularly risky for children and families because of the volume of traffic. The new path largely runs away from the road, although parts of the route pass through steep, rocky terrain and required extensive construction and safety measures.

The planned budget of 2.5 million euros was met despite the challenging terrain. The province provided most of the funding, with the remainder covered by the municipalities of Reutte and Breitenwang and the Reutte nature park region. Together with the new Seespitz Bridge, the cycle path improves connections around Reutte, Lake Plansee and Lake Heiterwang and expands the regional and wider cycle network.
