Salzburg local railway to resume full service on Sunday

The Salzburg local railway will resume full service on Sunday after a three-month closure for modernisation work, ORF reported. Commuters, students, local day-trippers and tourists will again be able to travel between Salzburg and Lamprechtshausen in the Flachgau district.

Rail replacement buses will run for two more days between Salzburg Central Station and Bürmoos before normal railway service resumes.

The modernisation project has been under way since 2021. New central platforms were built and made accessible at Anthering and Bergheim, while safety improvements were made at railway crossings.

Gerlinde Hagler of Salzburg Linien said barrier systems had been installed at four crossings in the city and at one in Oberndorf, significantly improving safety.

New crossings have also been added in Salzburg’s Itzling district, including at Andreas-Hofer-Straße. At the Nußdorfer Straße crossing in Oberndorf, a new barrier was built, while three other crossings received warning lights or bells.

The overall modernisation programme is expected to cost 200 million euros over six years, financed equally by the federal government and the province of Salzburg. Michael Baminger, chief executive of Salzburg AG, said 34 million euros had been allocated to the latest section. The upgrades are intended to improve comfort and stations, with the operator hoping to attract 15 percent more passengers.

The province of Salzburg is financing new train sets. Transport official and deputy governor Stefan Schnöll said the existing trains would be retired after 40 years. The new trains are due to arrive at the end of the year and will offer greater comfort.
