Salzburg grants three-year funding agreements to 16 institutions

The city of Salzburg will give 16 cultural institutions funding agreements covering 2027 to 2029, ORF reported. The city’s culture committee approved the agreements on Thursday to give the organisations greater planning certainty.

The institutions include the Kleines Theater, Schauspielhaus Salzburg, Salzburg Marionette Theatre and Salzburger Bildungswerk. Initiative Architektur and the MARK cultural centre will receive three-year agreements for the first time.

City councillor Sebastian Lankes of the Social Democratic Party said Salzburg would continue supporting its diverse cultural life despite tight budgets. The city is investing a double-digit million-euro amount, he said.

Dagmar Aigner, head of the city’s culture department, said there would be no increases next year, while inflation adjustments would take effect in 2028 and 2029. The agreements also include Fair Pay contributions intended to improve pay for cultural workers and artists.

A total funding increase of 5.5 percent has been set for the three-year period, said Green councillor Markus Grüner-Musil. He described the figure as a good compromise reached through talks with the cultural institutions and the umbrella organisation for Salzburg’s cultural venues.

Most of Thursday’s committee decisions were unanimous. The Freedom Party voted against the agreements for Schauspielhaus, Szene, dance centre SEAD and Jazzit. The Austrian People’s Party and the Freedom Party opposed the agreement for MARK Salzburg.

The Freedom Party objected to events by the Aichhörnchen Collective at the cultural centre. The Austrian People’s Party said it wanted to examine the programme for the coming years more closely.
