Three people died in Vorarlberg traffic crashes over summer

Three people died in road accidents in Vorarlberg in July and August, the same number as in the two-month period last year, ORF reported, citing provisional Interior Ministry data.

Across Austria, 81 people were killed in traffic accidents during the two months, down from 102 in the same period last year. From January 1 to August 31, Austria recorded 242 traffic deaths, 11 percent fewer than in the corresponding period of the previous year.

The number of fatal motorcycle crashes remained unchanged nationwide, with 29 people killed in July and August. Fatalities among car occupants fell to 24, compared with 36 in the same period last year.

Fatal bicycle crashes decline

Fatal e-bike crashes fell to five nationwide, while four people were killed in bicycle accidents. In July and August last year, 11 people were killed in accidents involving e-bikes and another 11 in bicycle accidents.

Vorarlberg’s three deaths matched its figures for 2022 and 2025. With one death, Vienna had the lowest total, followed by Burgenland with four. The figures can shift sharply in percentage terms because of the low absolute numbers: the difference between zero deaths in 2023 and three deaths in 2022, 2025 and 2026 represents only a few cases.

The Austrian Road Safety Association said that more people had died on Austria’s roads in the first eight months of the year than in Switzerland during all of the previous year. Switzerland recorded 214 traffic deaths in 2025, compared with 403 in Austria.

Despite the decline, Austria’s total remains above the target set by its road safety strategy. The strategy aims to halve the annual number of traffic deaths to 207 by 2030, based on the average for 2017 to 2019. By the end of August, Austria had already recorded 242 deaths, 35 above that target.
