Swiss business alliance backs EU electricity agreement

Business and energy-sector groups have formed the Swiss Electricity Agreement Alliance to promote the planned electricity agreement with the European Union, SRF reported. The alliance wants the agreement implemented without a “Swiss finish”, meaning without additional national regulation.

At a media conference in Bern, the alliance presented its arguments in favour of the agreement. It said clear rules for electricity exchanges with Europe were crucial for Switzerland. Without them, costs could rise and risks to grid stability could increase.

The alliance also said the agreement would strengthen Swiss hydropower and provide an important foundation for the energy transition.

Agreement faces political opposition

The electricity agreement with the EU is politically controversial. The newly formed alliance wants it implemented without additional Swiss regulations and plans to inform the public about its advantages ahead of a possible referendum.
