Matteo Müller wins Vorarlberg civilian service award

Matteo Müller from Altach has been named Vorarlberg’s civilian service volunteer of the year, ORF reported. The award was presented in Vienna on Tuesday evening. Müller completed his civilian service at Hellbrunnen kindergarten in Hohenems.

“During the small and large storms of everyday kindergarten life, and in emotionally challenging and upsetting moments, Matteo was a reliable anchor for the children, giving them support, security and a sense of comfort,” said Sarah Grill, head of Hellbrunnen kindergarten.

Alongside caring for the children, Müller did the shopping and helped prepare lunch. Grill said he made a point of involving the children in tasks such as setting and clearing the table and helping serve the food. This gave them opportunities to take responsibility, develop independence and feel like valued members of the community, she said.

During his service, Müller helped implement the “Double Check” project, which turned the gym into an art studio. He also explored the story of Saint Martin with the children through art for the lantern festival.

Müller also introduced movement and coordination games at the kindergarten. As a badminton coach, he gave the children an opportunity to try his sport.
