German man dies in 80-metre fall near Sexten

A 43-year-old German man died on Tuesday after falling more than 80 metres from a via ferrata at the Rotwand near Sexten in South Tyrol, ORF reported.

The man was travelling alone and was wearing via ferrata equipment. No one saw the fall, but other people near the route heard it and alerted emergency services.

A rescue helicopter located the man lying in a rock gully. Rescue workers were lowered to him, but a doctor could only confirm his death.

It was initially unclear from which point on the route he had fallen. The body was recovered by helicopter and taken to a mountain hut. His exact place of origin was also not initially known.
