Alexandri sisters join New Year’s Concert dance sequences

The Alexandri sisters will appear as water creatures in the dance sequences for the 2027 New Year’s Concert, ORF reported. The recordings have been completed in Vienna.

The sequences were filmed at the Academy of Sciences and the historic Amalienbad swimming pool in Vienna’s Favoriten district. Eleven members of the Vienna State Opera Ballet will dance to Johann Strauss’s “Treasure Waltz” and “Sophie Quadrille”. Andrey Kaydanovskiy, who also created the choreography in 2019, is directing the performances.

Eight dancers initially appear as researchers at the Academy, where they undergo a transformation. Four then move to the pool, where their planned swim is observed by three water creatures played by Anna-Maria, Eirini-Marina and Vasiliki Alexandri.

The three sisters were Austria’s most successful synchronised swimmers for many years and won numerous medals at world and European championships. They unexpectedly left Austria at the beginning of the year and are now swimming again under the Greek flag, according to ORF’s sports division.

The dance stories will be broadcast as part of ORF’s traditional New Year’s Concert coverage on 1 January. Salzburg fashion designer Flora Miranda created the costumes, which have a futuristic, unisex style. Michael Beyer is directing the sequences for television for the 14th time.

The Vienna Philharmonic’s concert will take place in the Golden Hall of the Musikverein. Russian conductor Tugan Sokhiev will lead the orchestra for the first time. The broadcast begins at 11.15 a.m. on ORF 2.
