Woman investigated after alleged attempt to suffocate son

ORF reported Monday that a 43-year-old woman allegedly tried to suffocate her five-year-old son with a pillow in Carinthia on July 15. Her partner intervened in time, according to the report.

The woman is being held in pre-trial detention, the Klagenfurt public prosecutor’s office said. She is being investigated on suspicion of attempted murder.

A psychiatric assessment found that she was criminally responsible at the time of the incident. The woman said she had not intended to kill her son, but only to “intimidate” him. That is the only statement she has made about the incident so far, prosecutor’s office spokesman Markus Kitz said.

It was not yet clear when the investigation would be completed.
