A heavily intoxicated driver hit an 82-year-old man in Fernitz-Mellach in Graz-Umgebung district on Saturday and drove away, leaving him seriously injured, ORF reported. Police quickly identified the 42-year-old woman.
The man was sweeping the Etschbachstraße road at about 5.25 p.m. after farm work had left it dirty. The driver apparently failed to see him as she passed and struck him.
The man was taken by rescue helicopter to Graz University Hospital.
A witness who knew the car’s registered owner led police to the woman’s home. She was there, immediately admitted what happened and said she had been driving the car at the time of the crash.
A breathalyser test showed a high level of alcohol intoxication. Police temporarily confiscated her driving licence.
She is expected to face charges on suspicion of negligently causing bodily injury in road traffic and abandoning an injured person, as well as for driving under the influence of alcohol and fleeing the scene.
