High alcohol level found in woman who drowned in Lake Lugano

A 52-year-old woman found dead in Lake Lugano drowned while under the influence of alcohol, Swiss public broadcaster SRF reported, citing the Ticino prosecutor’s office. An autopsy also detected sedatives, which probably contributed to her death.

The forensic examination identified drowning as the cause of death and found no natural illness that could have caused or contributed to it.

Toxicological tests showed a very high blood alcohol level and the presence of benzodiazepines. Investigators said the combination probably significantly impaired the woman’s alertness, coordination and awareness.

There is currently no indication that a third person was involved. Investigators are continuing to examine secured traces and gather witness statements.

The case attracted attention because the woman had published an audio recording that led to the resignation of Ticino State Councillor Claudio Zali. In the recording, released by Italian-language broadcaster RSI on July 21, Zali can be heard urging a friend to hit a female stalker, saying that he had done so himself.

The woman had also been the victim of a serious assault 10 days before her death. In the first days after her death, the prosecutor’s office did not officially disclose that she was behind the publication of the recording.
