Austrian courts, Innsbruck, Rene Benko

Austria’s Supreme Court has ordered a retrial in the case against René Benko, with the new hearing scheduled for September 22 in Innsbruck, ORF reported.

Benko was found partly guilty in October 2025 and sentenced to two years in prison. Prosecutors alleged that he gave his mother 300,000 euros, thereby withholding the money from his creditors.

In April, the Supreme Court partially overturned the Innsbruck Regional Court’s ruling on the first charge and the sentence. The decision resulted in a retrial before a panel court.

Benko faces up to 10 years in prison at the September 22 hearing.
