Salzburg school intake dips slightly but shows no clear trend

About 5,600 children are starting school in Salzburg this year, roughly 100 fewer than last year, ORF reported. The decline is linked to smaller birth cohorts, but figures from previous years show no clear downward trend.

About 75,000 children and young people are starting the new school year across Salzburg. The total number of pupils remains broadly stable, although the figures vary significantly between districts.

City leads districts in first graders

Salzburg city has 24,659 pupils, including 1,306 children starting school for the first time. That makes it the district with the most first graders.

The neighbouring Flachgau district has 18,025 pupils, including 1,674 first graders. In Pinzgau, 10,653 pupils are beginning the school year, with 934 starting first grade. Tennengau has 9,258 pupils, including 626 first graders.

First graders increase in Lungau

Almost 200 children are starting school in Lungau this year, out of a total of 2,667 pupils. Last year, the figure was about 160, almost reversing the previous years decline.

The trend is the opposite in Pongau, where the number of first graders has fallen to about 840 from more than 900 last year. The district has 9,535 pupils in total.
