Fake police officers target Vorarlberg residents with shock calls

Police in Vorarlberg have again warned about fraudulent “shock calls” after receiving more reports in recent days, ORF reported. Callers claim that a friend or close relative has caused a serious road accident and been detained, then demand bail.

The fraudsters pose as court employees or prosecutors and use the shock of the alleged accident to ask about cash, jewellery and other valuables. They then arrange for the money and valuables to be handed over at the victim’s home to supposed court officers.

Police said such calls tend to occur in short periods of increased activity. They advised people never to disclose information about valuables, cash or bank balances by phone, as police, courts and other reputable organisations do not request such information in this way.

Anyone receiving a suspicious call should end it immediately or ask for the caller’s name, department and telephone number. Police also recommend contacting relatives to check whether an accident has actually occurred, warning friends and family about the scam, and calling the local police using a known official number.
