Fraudster redirects employee’s salary to foreign bank account

ORF reports that an unknown person posing as an employee persuaded a company in Tyrol’s Unterland region to change the bank details used for salary payments.

The perpetrator contacted the company by email, claiming to have opened a new international bank account and asking for future wages to be paid into it. The company changed the employee’s registered bank details.

The employee’s salary was then transferred to the foreign account provided by the perpetrator. The fraud was discovered only after the employee reported that the payment had not arrived.

The company suffered a loss in the mid four figure euro range.
