Landbus Unterland wins award for 10-minute service

The Landbus Unterland bus service has won the 2026 VCÖ Mobility Award in Vorarlberg for introducing services every 10 minutes on its main routes, ORF reported. VMOBIL Rad Dornbirn and the redesigned Gmuondsplatz village square in Egg also received awards, while Hittisau won a special prize for its village-square project.

The service has operated at 10-minute intervals on the main routes since December, allowing passengers to use the network without memorising timetables. Daily ridership has increased by 3,000 passengers. Dornbirn railway station recorded 30,000 boardings and alightings per day.

Electric articulated buses now make up 67 percent of the fleet, reducing energy consumption. The share is scheduled to rise to 80 percent by 2028.

Vorarlberg Deputy Governor Christof Bitschi, the VCÖ and Austrian Federal Railways praised the projects for their efficiency and innovation. VCÖ representative Michael Schwendinger said such initiatives would improve public mobility over the long term. Bitschi said attractive public transport was crucial to modern and reliable mobility in Vorarlberg.

Egg was recognised for converting three state roads into 30 km/h zones, improving road safety and reducing noise. A former car park at the Gmuondsplatz has become a popular meeting place.

Dornbirn was honoured for introducing the region’s first bike-sharing system and linking it to existing transport networks. The system offers commuters an environmentally friendly option for the last part of their journey.

In Hittisau, a former car park was transformed into a village square with trees, seating and drinking fountains. The change was first tested temporarily before being made permanent. Mayor Gerhard Beer and other municipal representatives accepted the special award.
