Mamma Mia casting draws 850 applications
About 850 people have applied for roles in the 2027 production of Mamma Mia at the Mörbisch lakeside stage, ORF reported. Only 220 applicants were invited to demonstrate their skills in person.
The production will ultimately need just 40 performers who can dance perfectly, sing exceptionally well and interact with one another, said general music director Alfons Haider.
“Casting is always exciting. In a short time, you have to virtually strip yourself bare and present yourself,” musical performer Shlomit Butbul said.
Applicants have come from nearby and farther afield. Alex Karger from Neusiedl am See said he had known the stage since childhood and described the audition as a very special opportunity.
Canadian applicant Azama Bashir also performed for the jury. She said she sometimes became nervous in such situations, but gained confidence when she heard the musical and felt the energy of the other performers.
Director Andreas Gergen said all performers had to bring “a certain Mamma Mia vibe”.
