Burgenland, fire brigade, road accident

Firefighters freed a seriously injured car driver who was trapped after a head-on collision with a lorry on the B57 near Tobaj in Güssing district on Tuesday morning, ORF reported.

The crash happened at about 8.27 a.m. after the car crossed into the oncoming lane for reasons that remain unclear. Both vehicles came to rest in a roadside ditch.

Firefighters from Tobaj and Güssing used two hydraulic rescue devices to free the driver from the wreckage. An emergency medical helicopter flew him to hospital. The lorry driver was not injured.

Firefighters said recovering the articulated lorry was difficult because of extensive damage to its tractor unit. They eventually removed it using three winches.

The B57 was closed during the operation and a wide detour was put in place.
