Four wolf cubs confirm reproduction in Tyrol district

Four young wolves have been sighted and photographed in the municipality of Fiss in Austria’s Landeck district, ORF reported. The images were professionally assessed and confirm that wolves have reproduced in the district, according to the Tyrolean government.

The animals have not yet been genetically identified. Regular genetic testing is carried out as part of wolf monitoring, and the tests have confirmed that a pack was present in the Paznaun valley in 2025. It is not yet possible to determine whether the four cubs belong to that pack.

Search for genetic material intensified

The Tyrolean government said no suitable samples are currently available for genetic identification. Monitoring has therefore been intensified in the affected area, and hunters have been asked to look for suitable material, particularly droppings, which should be reported and collected for further testing.

On August 18, a wildlife camera in the municipality of Fließ recorded a wolf. According to the Tyrolean government, the images showed a female wolf with a visible mammary line, suggesting possible reproduction in the area. The discovery of the four cubs has now confirmed it.

The Tyrolean government also urged residents to report sightings of large predators as quickly as possible through its wildlife sighting form or directly to the responsible district authority. Images and genetic samples are particularly important for professional assessment.
