TU Graz starts hydrogen engine to support power supply
Researchers at Graz University of Technology have commissioned a hydrogen engine designed to provide a climate-friendly alternative to gas and coal-fired power plants, ORF reported. The engine is intended to support the energy supply and could also be used in shipping.
Developed under the leadership of Nicole Wermuth, the engine can start within minutes when the electricity system lacks sufficient power. It can then produce additional electricity to help compensate for shortfalls in wind and solar generation.
Researchers at the university’s Large Engines Competence Center developed a combustion process designed to use hydrogen efficiently and generate maximum energy while remaining immediately available when needed. The engine is already integrated into TU Graz’s energy network, with the electricity and waste heat used directly on campus, according to Rector Horst Bischof.
The technology could also be suitable for short ferry routes, where hydrogen propulsion may offer a practical solution.
