Salzburg spends 700,000 euros on nearly 1,000 young trees

Salzburg has planted almost 1,000 new trees in recent years, spending 700,000 euros over the past five years, ORF reported.

The city’s gardening office has selected hornbeams, English oaks and sycamore maples as the most suitable species for Salzburg in the era of climate change.

Gardening office director Christian Stadler said hornbeams provide substantial shade and are highly stable. English oaks grow large, offer plenty of shade and provide a habitat for insects. Robust sycamore maples can withstand heavily compacted soil, air pollution and salt.

The new plantings bring the number of trees in the city to about 25,000. The city is also working to keep the other roughly 24,000 trees healthy for as long as possible, Stadler said.

Trees improve the microclimate, filter fine dust and store carbon dioxide as they grow, while also contributing to people’s quality of life.
