Superbloom adapts as stadium renovation reshapes festival

Munich’s Superbloom festival will open under difficult conditions, with the Olympiastadion stadium unavailable, two headline shows cancelled and unsettled weather forecast. BR reported that organisers are introducing a new format for the festival’s fifth edition.

Construction work has replaced the festival’s usual centrepiece with cranes, barriers and a redesigned layout. The two main stages inside the stadium will not be used, forcing the organisers to rethink the entire event.

Alongside the two Experience Days on the weekend, Superbloom will hold additional concert evenings for the first time. From Saturday to Wednesday, the festival will take place across the Olympiapark, a large park complex, with each evening given its own focus.

The main stage will move to Hans-Jochen-Vogel-Platz, a square in the park, while further concerts will be held around the Olympiasee lake. The organisers aim to make up for the reduced space by extending the festival across more days and continuing to offer a programme featuring international stars.

The line-up remains the festival’s main draw. Zara Larsson, Kygo, Tom Odell, Zartmann and Lorde are among the national and international headline acts. The programme also includes artists popular with younger audiences, including Ikkimel, Filow and Sombr.

Superbloom is also maintaining its mix of genres and activities, combining pop, indie, electronic music and singer-songwriter performances with talks, workshops and interactive events. Since its launch, the festival has presented itself as more than a concert event.

Preparation has not been without setbacks. The planned performances by Ayliva and Paul Kalkbrenner were cancelled in July because of production-related challenges. Both had been among the best-known names in the original programme, but the rest of the line-up has largely remained unchanged and the additional concerts from Monday to Wednesday are scheduled to go ahead.

Weather is another uncertainty. Mild temperatures are expected during the festival weekend, although isolated showers remain possible. While this is not unusual for an open-air festival, the forecast could influence last-minute ticket purchases.

Organisers expect about 10,000 visitors on Saturday and around 20,000 on Sunday. Each of the three individual weekday concerts is also expected to attract about 10,000 people.

Superbloom will run from August 29 to September 2 at the Olympiapark. The festival weekend with its Experience Days will be followed by three additional concert evenings during the week. Bayern 3 is presenting the festival.
