Wreck of crashed aircraft found in Attersee

The wreck of a small aircraft that crashed into Lake Attersee has been located at a depth of about 163 metres, ORF reported. A diving robot will now examine the crash site in greater detail.

The initial focus will be on determining the condition of the wreck and how it can be recovered as safely as possible. The aim is to bring the aircraft out of the lake in one piece. It remains unclear whether anyone is still inside the wreck.

The recovery is expected to begin as soon as possible. A diving robot is to take a line down to the wreck and position it around the aircraft so it can be lifted. The exact recovery method will first be agreed with an expert, the fire service said.

Recovering the aircraft from that depth will be technically difficult and is expected to take time. The wreck lies at one of the deepest points of Lake Attersee.

The two-seat aircraft crashed into the lake on Wednesday morning. Witnesses said it had suddenly lost altitude rapidly before spiralling into the water. The aircraft sank completely shortly after the impact.
