Admont library ranks 17th among world’s most beautiful interiors

The interior of the world’s largest monastery library at Admont Abbey, a Benedictine monastery in the Liezen district, has been ranked among the 20 most beautiful interiors worldwide, ORF reported on Wednesday.

The ranking was compiled by All Clear, a travel insurer, based on the effect of significant interiors on visitors and their ability to fascinate and attract attention.

Admont Abbey’s library scored 77.7 out of 100 points, placing it 17th in the ranking. The Abbey Library of St Gall in Switzerland took first place, followed by Mysore Palace in India and the Hungarian Parliament in Budapest.

“It is wonderful to see that culture, architecture and literature continue to touch and inspire people around the world even after 250 years,” abbey librarian Maximilian Schiefermüller said in a statement. “Our library is a place of knowledge and beauty, and a place that connects people with our history.”

The library was completed in 1776 and is marking its 250th anniversary this year. It was also named one of the world’s five most beautiful libraries in an online vote by an international art platform in 2025.
