Families with an Upper Austria Family Card can travel free on buses, trams and local trains across the state on four days in September, ORF reports.

Parents accompanied by up to four children can use the offer on September 5, 6, 19 and 20. They can travel for one day to excursion destinations without traffic jams or the need to find parking.

Manfred Hainbuchner, the deputy governor of Upper Austria and the state’s family affairs representative, said the initiative was intended to help families experience and discover the state together.

The campaign is also designed to encourage families to switch to public transport. A similar family public transport day held two years ago as part of European Mobility Week attracted around 1,500 families, according to ORF.

People who hold an Upper Austria Family Card can take part by downloading a leisure ticket. Günther Steinkellner, the state transport councillor, said the offer should encourage newcomers to public transport and show that it was easy to use.

Participation is limited to 1,500 tickets per day.
