Metal debris halts Vienna S-Bahn service between Meidling and Liesing

Vienna’s S-Bahn suburban rail service has been suspended between Meidling and Liesing after a Railjet struck a metal object on the tracks, ORF reported. The rail line is expected to remain restricted until around 5 p.m.
The Railjet, travelling from Vienna, hit an iron part near Hetzendorf station at about 2.20 p.m. and had to stop. Around 200 passengers were on board, according to ÖBB spokesperson Bernhard Rieder, who spoke to ORF Vienna.
Police helped passengers leave the train because it could not continue. The Railjet must first be inspected, ÖBB said.
It is not yet clear where the metal object came from. A recycling plant is located near the line, and investigators are examining whether it may have been the source.
Replacement transport arranged
The line remains closed until further notice. Long-distance trains are being diverted, while replacement transport has been arranged for S-Bahn and regional services between Meidling and Liesing.
Passengers with ÖBB tickets can also use Wiener Linien services. ÖBB is warning travellers to allow up to 60 additional minutes for journeys in the area.
