Police catch drug-positive driver fleeing at 196 km/h

Police in Lower Austria tracked down a 26-year-old driver after he fled a patrol on the A1 West Autobahn, ORF reported. The man was travelling at up to 196 km/h, tested positive for drugs and did not have a valid driving licence.

The Vienna resident had committed several speeding and following-distance violations early on Friday. Officers tried to stop him near Kirchstetten in St Pölten district, but he ignored their signals and continued driving at 196 km/h in a section where the limit was 130 km/h, the state police directorate said.

Police later found the abandoned car during a search in St Pölten and located the 26-year-old nearby. He will be reported to the responsible administrative authority.

British driver loses licence after speeding

Police also caught a second speeding driver on Friday evening on the A4 East Autobahn in the municipality of Bruck an der Leitha. The car, driven by a 24-year-old British man, was measured at 171 km/h in a 100 km/h zone at about 6.20 p.m.

Officers stopped the vehicle and carried out a driver and vehicle inspection. They temporarily confiscated the man’s driving licence at the scene and collected a provisional security deposit. He will also be reported to the responsible district administrative authority.
