Salzburg launches campaign on new e-scooter rules

Salzburg state authorities and police have launched an information campaign on new rules for electric scooters, ORF reported. Since May, e-scooters have generally been subject to the same rules as bicycles, although stricter e-scooter-specific regulations take precedence.

E-scooters must be ridden on cycle paths, while riding on pavements and pedestrian paths is prohibited. Carrying a second person is also strictly forbidden. The helmet requirement has been extended to riders up to age 16, and a blood alcohol limit of 0.5 parts per thousand applies. Indicators and a bell are also mandatory.

The campaign aims to raise awareness of the requirements. Serious accidents involving e-scooters and e-bikes are increasing, with more than 200 e-scooter accidents recorded in Salzburg last year.
