Rescue teams search Salzach for person in water

Rescue teams launched a large-scale search for a person reported in the Salzach river near Oberndorf bei Salzburg on Friday evening, ORF reported. The alarm was raised shortly before 7 p.m., and the operation was still under way late that night, according to the water rescue service.

Several water rescue stations, firefighters, the Red Cross and police were involved. Because the Salzach forms the border with Germany near Oberndorf, German emergency services also joined the search.

A sudden and severe storm front that moved across the Flachgau region and Salzburg state early Friday evening also led to several water rescue operations on Salzburg’s lakes. The incidents mainly involved capsized boats and water sports participants reported to be in distress.

At Lake Wallersee, a capsized sailing boat with people in distress was reported near Marieninsel. Rescue boats found that nobody was in danger. At Lake Wolfgang, several surfers were reported in distress in Fürbergbucht, but all had already reached the shore safely. Floating objects also prompted a water rescue operation in Abersee on Lake Wolfgang; no one was in distress there either.
