Google plans to reuse heat from Kronstorf data centre

Google’s planned data centre in Kronstorf in the Linz-Land district is expected to begin operating in 2027 if construction stays on schedule, ORF reports. The company plans to reuse the heat generated by the facility, while diesel generators would provide backup power only in emergencies.

The first development phase is scheduled to start in 2027. The project is expected to become one of Austria’s largest data centres.

Heat could be supplied to nearby businesses

According to the state of Upper Austria, Google intends to use the waste heat itself and make additional heat available in the immediate surroundings. Talks have already begun with neighbouring businesses about possible uses, and some of the necessary infrastructure is already in place.

The option would also be open to other companies in the business park. A study is examining whether the heat could be used further afield. If technically and economically suitable solutions are found, the heat would be provided free of charge to potential partners.

Diesel generators limited to emergencies

The state said the facility would not use gas-powered generators for backup power. Instead, diesel generators would operate only during power outages or legally required maintenance.

The number of operating hours would be limited by the authorities and monitored.

The state said it currently had no information about additional data centre locations in Upper Austria. Google has said the facility would initially operate at 150 megawatts and be designed to reach up to 500 megawatts at full capacity. About 100 direct jobs are expected to be created.
