Regions put different names atop Switzerland’s baby-name lists

Emma, Sofia and Noah were among the most popular names for newborns in all three of Switzerland’s main language regions in 2025, but regional preferences varied significantly, SRF reported, citing new data from the Federal Statistical Office.

In German-speaking Switzerland, the most popular girls’ names were Emma, Mia and Sofia, in a slightly different order from the national ranking. Noah was the clear favourite for boys, as it was across Switzerland.

In French-speaking Switzerland, Olivia, Alma and Eva ranked among the top five girls’ names, although they were much less popular in German-speaking Switzerland. Gabriel was the most popular boys’ name in the region, but ranked only 19th in German-speaking Switzerland.

In Italian-speaking Switzerland, Amélie, Alice and Sophie were among the five most popular girls’ names. They were significantly less popular in the other two language regions. Leonardo was the clear favourite among boys, but did not rank among the top 20 in either German-speaking or French-speaking Switzerland.

The Federal Statistical Office also updated data on surnames. It said Switzerland had a high level of surname diversity. Müller was the country’s most common surname, carried by 52,674 people, or 0.6 percent of the population.
