Fire destroys Thusis restaurant as five people remain missing

Five people are missing after a major fire destroyed a restaurant with apartments in Thusis, Graubünden, SRF reported. Nearly 100 firefighters from several brigades are still working to extinguish the blaze.

Authorities said eight people were injured, two of them seriously. Initial findings indicate that the fire started on the building’s second floor, according to police.

The staircase collapsed, forcing responders to open the roof with a crane. Fourteen people managed to leave the burning building. The injured were treated by emergency medical teams from Mittelbünden, Chur, Schiers and Surselva, as well as a Rega crew, and taken to hospitals in Chur, Thusis, Ilanz and Zurich.

The Careteam Grischun is supporting those affected, relatives and emergency workers with a four-person team. The municipality of Thusis has organised accommodation and meals.

Graubünden cantonal police and the public prosecutor’s office are investigating the cause of the fire.
